New From Eugene, OR

I'm in my first year of architecture grad school here in Eugene, and am loving being a new bicycle commuter! I've been able to ride a bike for more than 20 years, but have never lived anywhere that was very practical to ride (ie commute) much (Philly suburbs, and very hilly Ithaca NY). I've been mountain biking a bit in the PA mountains, but other than around the neighborhood as a child, thats about it. Although the winter wet here in Oregon can be pretty miserable on a bike, rain gear, extensive bike lanes and flat topography make this town a pleasure to bike in.

I started with a cheap, used Mongoose mountain bike off of Craig's List, hoping it would double for commuting and trail riding - but with school going, it only sees the mile of pavement from here to campus, and really drags *****. So... I've acquired an '87 Peugeot which I'm hoping to clean up and use as my commuter. I'll be posting about it in the C&V forum for help identifying it. Identifying and repairing this Peugeot is my main reason for joining this forum, but I'm sure I'll stick around for other information as I get more into cycling.

I am also intrigued with the fixed gear bikes I see people riding around (never seen/noticed one on the road until getting to Eugene). A few friends ride fixed, so I'm sure I'll try theirs out some time and see if I like it. I could see myself getting into recreational rides (groups?, road bikes, rolling country roads), as well as more trail riding.

Welcome! You've come to the right places, great University, nice town (awfully high bike theft rate, be careful) and fantastic bike culture. It's a place for every cycling interest, make the most of it.
