another new member from the UK

Hi

I'm in my late 50s and been cycling form more years than I care to remember. I stumbled across this forum by accident as I was looking for advice on whether or not to buy a compact or triple chainset for my new road bike. For everyday riding a compact would be more than adequate, but I do ride the big mountains such as the Ventoux, and I'm not so sure a compact is the right approach. I am not a racer, but given that I am reasonably fit and not grossly overweight (and hope to maintain this) what is the opinion on whether a 29x30 would make much difference to a 29x34?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Good cycling

Hello pantani, it really depends on 'your engine', or in this case, 'your legs'. I ride 12 speed steel frame bikes up and down my local hills without too much trouble, but I don't think that my hills are the equivalent of the Ventoux!

I think that if you are reasonably fit you can probably make do with a compact double...

What part of the UK are you in?

Welcome to BF!

Thanks. Not convinced I'm afraid. I live in the south east of England - highest point 1000'!
