New in Maryland

I can't remember the last time I was on a bike but I used to do some triathlons and century rides back in the day. Have always wanted to do the RAGBRAI ride. I sold my 27" frame road bike years ago thinking I would stick to the mountain bike but now I want to get back to road riding and discover touring. Now I just have to find a new or used 27" frame road/touring bike to get myself started again. Are there any of those dinosaurs out there? Thanks!

Hi exploring, yes, those whopping big bikes are definitely out there! In fact, if you go to the Classic & Vintage forum, there is a thread devoted to those very such things .

I can't remember how far back it is, but if you ask this as a question in C & V, you will find a fair number of people responding.

Welcome to BF!

Welcome!

If you want to get into some long distance riding, check out the DC Randonneurs at:

http://www.dcrand.org

They have long rides (100 miles) on both Saturday and Sunday unless they have a special event going on (i.e., Brevet or Flèche).

Also, since you will need to start ramping up mileage, you may want to consider riding with the Baltimore Bike Club:

http://www.baltobikeclub.org

They have rides conducive to re-starting as well as rides for the brand new cyclist. They also have a race team--Team BBC:

http://www.baltobikeclub.org/index.pl/racing

Definitely check out this thread for others in and around Maryland:

Where are the MD peoples

hey exploring, if you live near or around Baltimore, you should stop in Velocipede (www.velocipedebikeproject.org) we have a ton of old bikes that we provide people in exchange for volunteer hours (it should all be explained on the site). anyway, we won't have any super-light frames or components, but if you are indeed looking for an "old dinosaur" with room for wider wheels and plenty of eyelets for fenders and paniers, then we might be able to help you out.

A wise man once told me that instead of whinging and complaining, I should try to make BikeForums a better community by helping fellow cyclists.
