Hello from Columbus Ohio

I will be retiring in the next year or two. I would like to start a new (but part time) job building bikes. I know the department stores use employees and bike builders from other companies... does anyone here work for one of those stores or companies; if so... is it worth it?

Welcome to Bike Forums !

I am not retired but do build up and repair more bikes than the average human being.

I choose to volunteer my time at our local bike co-op rather than work in a shop as even though I could, putting money in other people's pockets would be far less satisfying.

I do plan to make bike building a career although my desire is to really build bikes,as in...from the frame on up.

Hello Mike, there's been a few threads on the merits of working on bicycles for a living, but probably the best thing for you in your situation is to see about 'flipping' bikes. It's not necessarily a lot of money, but it keeps you busy, and gets you pocket money.

Or, you could do as Sixty Fiver does, and volunteer at a co-op. The joy of returning a bike to a useful state, and helping someone who needs it, is well worth it.

Welcome to BF!

Hello fellow Columbus, Ohioan! Not sure about you question but I just wanted to wish you good luck on finding a place to do just that, and welcome you to the forums. :)
