Hola bike folks. Over the years I've Googled up various bike things and kept running into this site, so thought I'd go ahead and sign up. I'm a daily commuter, even this week when it was -10 F one morning (not a very long commute, though), and former triathlete and sometime recreational/fitness rider. Once rode the around the U.S. on a long tour from New Orleans to Richmond, Va., via Los Angeles, Portland, and Chicago.

The issue I was trying to address when I came across the forum today was fenders. When I moved here last year (from Atlanta, where snow is not an issue), I bought a Giant Bowery SS/fixie as my rain/show/fun bike to commute with. It's aluminum and has no derailleur to gunk up, and it even comes with a plastic chain guard. Because of the snow and ice, I put cyclocross tires on to get a little more traction, and added clip-on fenders, including a Planet Bike Grunge Guard in front.

The GG worked well for me in Atlanta, where the only weather problem was water. But here, the snow catches on the tire and rubs off on the brake and fork, creating an icy shower that blows right back on me. I'd add a full fender on the front, but there's hardly any clearance. So, any suggestions for the forum newbie?
