Returning to cycling
Oh my God, it's been 25 years since I rode when I was 47 or so. I'm retired now on my SS and have all my stuff in storage in California while I'm living in upstate NY, house sitting for a friend. Brrr!! No car, just a hardly used Peugeot Ventoux that I bought a couple months ago for cheap. I finally got some big pedals on it so I would feel secure putting any weight down. It had the stock narrow little things for skinny feet in cycling shoes. When the roads dry out a little here, I ride around town to get my legs back. I used to commute and tour on a Raleigh Super Course when I was riding in the 80s and I really enjoyed it. I figure I'll pull together the kit I need to get back on the road again and ride back to California this spring. I've been looking at the Surly LHT with longing, but I know I can use this Peugeot just as well and spend less. It's still a bare bones bike without fenders, racks or lights; but I did get a Zound Airhorn, what fun! I've been surfing the net, getting caught up on opinions about various equipment and lurking on ebay, seeing what prices are. The sites with journals by people who are touring are great to read and when I'm snowed in I can be on the road, virtually. What a range of approaches people have to touring. I'll be tuning my bike up and I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.

Well hello Mr. Upstate NY! Snow? Bah - I luvs it! (100% commuter here). Welcome back to the cycling thing though! I love it - talk about it a lot when I do presentations for my club, etc. Not sure about the air horn as I've had a few people (dam taxi cab driver) use them on me for the first time this past year and wasn't pleased about them - especially when they blew them at me when I was in busy traffic (I ride a lot of heavy city traffic for commuting). Take care.
