hello all, i just registered because ive been a long-time biker but not really 'in the know' so much as i should think i should be. in any case, i just registered for STP (seattle to portland) and am seeking advice on roadbiking. the same hardrock sport that has took my abuse since 7th grade (about 7 years!) is living out her final days and is soon to be replaced by something lighter and better, but alas my knowledge fails me.

Welcome to the forum!
As a former Seattle/Tacoma resident, I would like to welcome you.
There are some good members here from your area, and also, I know STp gets a lot of mention in the Road Cycling forum. You may want to search there for some threads on the topic, or post your questions. You will be able to start some good natured debates on the best bike for your needs.
Again, welcome.

Hello AI, if you haven't already done so, come on and check out the locals in the Pacific Northwest regional forum. You aren't the only BF member in Bellingham, there's at least TommyL there as well .
What kind of budget are you looking at? Do you like classic steel bikes? Can you wrench?
Welcome to BF!

Thanks for the welcomings! I'm looking at a rather modest budget: nothing really too fancy, but a beginner road bike at best. something like a Honda civic of road bikes: inexpensive, light, but has lots of additional stuff for it (and will last forever). maybe I'm asking too much. if i had to, I'd place a price range of about 4-500. I don't know what wrenching is, and i can manage with classic steel bikes, but I'm aiming at something aluminum.
Take a look at the stickies in the Road Cycling forum for an idea of what's out there for the modern stuff...
