Hi all,

New guy to the forum and cycling in general. The last bike I had was a Specialized Rock Hopper, but I am looking to get into road cycling and participating in some events in the future. For example, the Tour de Cure (also a type 1 diabetic), starting with the lower distances and working my way up to the full century (some day!).

In any case, some questions:

1. I noticed that BikesDirect has some good deals. However, what happens if something goes wrong? I see their return policy and warranty policy, but I am looking for some real world experience as to what I can expect if my bike needs something. Also, I won't be getting any free tune-ups or anything like that, so I was looking for some opinions about buying online. Oh, and will assembly be difficult?

2. Also, this bike seems to be a good deal, but I don't know very much about the brand:

Does that look good for a person new to cycling?

3. Lastly, regarding the fitting. I am not sure what size frame I need. I suppose that I will need to go to a local shop and get fitted?

First, welcome to BF.

I have no affiliation with any brand or bike store. I would still recommend finding a local bike shop and asking them about what would be best for you. They'll certainly recommend the brands they carry and that's alright if you feel comfortable with whomever you meet.
Then find another bike shop and go through the same routine. You'll learn a lot about bikes as well as get a feel for how they'll be after the sale. You can probably save a few bucks on line but it's not going to make up for having a local shop that has an investment in your satisfaction.

Hi DC Yeti, bikesdirect can be a good deal, as long as you know what you're getting into. Try asking your LBS if they will put together your bike for you when you get it, otherwise, be prepared to put it together yourself. It'll cost you some money for the LBS to put it together.

Check out the regional subforums, and say hi to your neighbours, too .

And yes, your LBS can be your best friend - and definitely bounce questions off them. Before too long however, you must watch for that dreaded disease of bikeitis - terrible affliction - kinda has the same symptoms as when you were a kid and had the Sears Wish Book in front of you or the Sunday paper Toy Store flyers .... mMmmMMM bikes. I have a bunch around me, each may specialize in carrying a certain brand(s) of bicycles, clothing, etc. They must all be visited

Oh, and never, ever, visit one on payday.

I just need to go out to the LBS and find a helmet, lights, and maybe investigate some clipless pedals....I have never used them, but I am interested,
