Hello to all!
I stumbled upon Bike Forums by accident; I was researching my Fuji Sagres to find info on the crankset and found an archived thread, then found the site! I used to run road races for ab 21 years, then my old motocross knee and bad back got the best of me, so I gave up competitive running for road and mountain biking.
I've always been a lover of two wheels, whether it was a minibike, bicycle or motorcycle. The first bike i ever purchased with my own money was a standard bike of unknown brand, bought in 1967 for $27 at the old Vonnegut's department store in Indianapolis (owned by Kurt Vonnegut's family). Then in 1974 I saved $140 from a paper route and bought my first ten-speed, a new baby blue '74 Schwinn Continental. After that beloved bike was stolen a year later, I did not own another bike till I found my current road bike, the Fuji Sagres, at a yard sale in '94. Paid $90 for it, primarily to bike ride with my wife, whom I was dating at the time. It is bone stock, all original everything. I've had it ever since then, riding it in a Duathlon, then garaging it till about two years ago when I began riding more instead of running. My greatest adventure with it was last year, when our mountain bike club rode our annual road century from Franklin, IN to Bloomington, IN and back--106 mile round trip. The first time I ever crashed on that bike, ever, was at mile 60 of the century. Bent my bars, the front brake caliper, and slightly warped both wheels. Scraped my right knee and elbow, and the heels of both my hands. However, I did not give up! I finished the ride in 5:40:00, averaging 15 mph on a very hilly course on the hottest day of the year on my first century!
Anyway, the reason I found the site was I'm trying to upgrade my bike so it will handle hilly southern Indiana better. I was going to cannibalize the bike and use the parts to convert a mountain bike frame to a road bike, but after looking around eBay I found a decent set of 3 x 8 STI shifters and an eight cog freewheel, and appropriate derailleurs so I can use the current wheelset. All I need to do is find a triple crankset that'll work.
Anyway, I'll be posting my bike info on the Fuji serial number thread. Thanks for the welcome!
