I'm going to start commuting in Milwaukee. :-)

I started up at this forum roughly ay ear ago, but I was in the service, entertaining the idea of bike commuting to base. Turns out, it was completely impractical (dangerous country roads, no shoulders, fast moving trucks from a nearby quarry).

I just got out of the service about two months ago, and I'm doing some house-hunting in Milwaukee. I transfered to UW-Milwaukee as a math/physics major, and plan on joining the herds of like-minded people that commute by bike.

Milwaukee, as of late, has become a fairly bike-friendly city. Lots of bike lanes, and reasonable safety restrictions have been enacted. I thought about joining up with a critical mass group, but I get uncomfortable when I read some of the stuff their members post on the internet. Are they all bat-**** crazy?

I don't own a bike yet, but I think I'd like to get a road bike. There are a bunch of bike shops nearby, and I don't think it'll break me to get a nice used one.

No, but a lot of them are . Stay away from the ones likely to get you arrested .

Check out this thread in the C & V forum. It's a great place to find nice older bikes.

Welcome back, and thank you for your service!

Welcome to BF!

You can find a lot of nice used bikes around. Just be sure that it fits you properly. That is very important and can sometimes make or break the love of cycling.

Good Luck!
