I want to take a quick minute and say hi. I am new to biking and I am in the researching stage of commuting to work. I live in Columbus, Ohio. I don't own a bike yet, but I plan on buying one very soon. I have enjoyed the pics of other members utility bikes and their ingenuity in making their bike their own. I was dead set buying a new bike until I started reading some threads. I think it may be cooler to buy one used and make it my own. At first blush this seems to be a great forum with a lot of knowledgeable members. I can't wait to read more and ultimately relate some of experiences.

Hi Eric, we have a lot of fun with classic & vintage bikes here. New bikes can be pretty nice too, and I know that there are a number of makers who make bikes for those utilitarian purposes. Take a look around, and enjoy your reading.

check out commuter section at bf, lot's of tips/ideas. what is your distance to/from work, traffic, options, etc. have you ever ridden a bicycle? what kind (road/mtb/'bent) did you ride? about 50% of the bikes i currently ride were bought "used". used bikes are a good starting point too, i learned to ride with a trash-picked junker about 32 years ago....

I rode when I was a kid, and a little as an adult. I used to ride an old ten speed that my dad and uncle rebuilt for me, but we lived out in the country, so I just rode in circles around our horseshoe drive. I used to work security and they had a couple of MTB that I used to jump on and ride around campus. Other than that, I currently don't own a bike, but i have been checking out the commuter section of the forums to see what other people are riding.

I have checked out craigslist, but I haven't been fitted for a bike or anything, so I am not sure what size frame I would need or anything like that. I was hoping to get out this past weekend to a couple of LBS, but I am in school and I have a paper due this Wednesday. I should be writing it as I type this message. Hopefully, I will get out this weekend and look around. I totally forgot about ebay as an option. I was originally thinking of a hybrid or MTB. One of my professors is an avid cyclist and he recommend a cyclocross, so now I am considering a cyclocross. I'm really not sure. There are lots of options and I am a Libra, which drives my wife nuts, so I take a long time to make a decision.

Hybrids are all right, and so are MTBs, but if you plan on riding almost exclusively on paved roads, you should look at a road bike. Check out the fit at the LBS, and see who's interested in keeping you as a customer!
