Soon to be riding in Baltimore

Hey everyone!

Just figured I'd introduce myself and mention my reasons for joining these forums.

My name is Joe, I'm a video technician and photographer from Baltimore. I've had it in my mind for the past few years that I wanted to get a bike, as the last time I rode was sometime in early 1998 when I left my cheap Kmart bicycle at a bandmate's house and just never went to retrieve it...

I've been reading about the various types of bikes for the past month, and I think I've managed to narrow my focus to <$500 single-speed/fixed gear bikes. I'm going to take a test ride on the Trek Soho S tomorrow, and probably end up buying it unless something convinces me otherwise during my research tonight. I like the simplicity of a SS/FG (also, I rarely changed gears on my crappy Kmart bike that I had as a kid...for a long time I didn't even know what those levers did, so I just ignored them). Speed is not important to me, nor is the ability to go off-road (beyond occasional grass or dirt), so no Road bike or Mountain bike for me. I just want something to ride around the neighborhood, possibly take with me on vacations to other cities, etc. I'd love to use it as a true "commuter," but I live 40 miles from where I work, so that's not much of an option (but don't worry—I carpool!).

So... that's about it for now. See you in the forums!

Joe,

A FG is fun and is a graet way to train and build up endurance, strength, and technique. But make sure that's want you want. Constantly pedaling is not not everyone. That's why many like SS. Of course, you can get a hub that works both ways.

Welcome

Hi Joe, don't forget to check out the regional forums and say hi to the locals. I just got to try a FG for the first time last night, and it was pretty cool! But as StanSeven says, it's a different kind of cycling--fun, but different.

As a kid, even if you didn't use the gears, you were essentially using your bike as a singlespeed, and if you weren't peddling, you were freewheeling. FG is VERY different!

Welcome to BF!
