hello hello!

I recently bought my first bike since i was twelve, a vintage raleigh cruiser bike that i just fell in love with at a second-hand bike shop, in surprisingly good condition.

Despite my initial trepidation i have been finding biking around the city much less scary than expected, and i feel like a day without a bike ride is a day wasted!

Hello kirsten, how old is your Raleigh? Do you have photos?

Welcome to BF!

i have no clue!

I don't have a picture of it yet...but it has three "speeds", and the mechanism to change them says "sturmey archer". I love it...the only trouble is it's pretty hard to pedal if i'm faced with even the slightest incline!

It sounds like a lovely old Raleigh 3 speed, with a Sturmey Archer hub. The Classic & Vintage forum folks would like to see your Raleigh when you have time to get some photos .

There's an excellent remedy for the problem: replacing the rear cog which probably has 18 teeth with a cog that has 20+ teeth. This makes all the gears more useful. A fairly easy job, requiring removal and replacement of a snap ring and possibly adding a link to the chain. Details available for the asking in the Classic&Vintage forum.
