Greetings
Hello All
My name is Charles, I am 48 years old and am 2 weeks into my rebirth as a rider. When my 2 children were young and we lived in West Texas (1986) I rode 40 miles a day after work. Somewhere along the way I stopped. Now I am a Clydesdale, I began consideration of riding again due largely to 3+ dollar gas prices. I have only a 3 mile commute and seems perfect to start again. I have now made 2 weeks daily riding to work, plus extra miles after work. Goals? Save the expense of commuting using a gas guzzling pickup, improve my health, lose weight, live longer for my 5 grandchildren. Goals will be added as I go along. I live in Houston TX, not the most bike friendly town, but the extra miles after work are easy to do using a bike path along Braes Bayoo in Houston. I did 20 miles this morning and since starting 2 weeks ago can already feel a difference in normal energy levels and levels while riding. Thanks for having this forum and allowing me to join.

Hi Charles, those are great goals, but don't forget to add "having fun" to the list . Check into the regional forums--Texas has a regional forum all to itself.
So, what bike are you riding?
Welcome to BF!

I thought having fun was a given. I do have to admit though. Right now when riding for exercise, not much fun, more like hard work.
I chose a commuter and one for low maintanance for my return. I have a new Specialized Globe City 6 with the Shimano Nexus 8 IGH. So far I really like this bike. The 8 speed is spot on for my type of riding.

Welcome to the forums. I grew up in Clute, a few miles to the south of you there. What part of west Texas did you live in?

Born in Lubbock but grew up 45 miles northeast in Floydada TX. In the mid 80's we lived in Lubbock and I started riding. Got up to about 40miles daily and 60 on weekends. Not much compared to some but I thought I was in pretty good shape at 180lbs, now I am 250+. Hopefully by this time next year 200 will be seen. In Houston live inside the 610 loop near medical center, 3 miles to work. Today I road 10 extra miles after work. Hope to keep this up with the heat and humidity coming.
