The New Goose

Hi guys.

I'm from Newcastle (Australia) and I've just picked up my very first mountain bike. It's a (2008) Mongoose Teocali Elite. Would have loved to have stretched (another $700 or so) and grabbed the Super, but hey, I'm still very happy and anxious to get acquainted with this thing. I really haven't ridden anything regularly since my BMX at high school so I'm expecting this to be a little weird ... given that I haven't been at high school for nearly 18 years! Don't get me wrong, I have always been a fairly active person, involved in a few different outdoor sports; football (soccer), water polo, cricket, golf, tennis and so on. But I had a major knee reconstruction about two years ago which proved to be a real downer for me. It involved removing and replacing part of my tibia with a couple of big-ass screws and repairing a couple of snapped ligaments. The procedure was called a Patellofemoral Realignment with Tibial Tubercle Transfer (sorry, I was a radiographer for about nine years). It was a long recovery and I have never really gotten back into anything very physical since. Unfortunately, I am now about 15 kgs (33 lbs) heavier than I was before I sustained the injury - I am now 105kgs (230 lbs) - and feeling pretty ****ty about myself.

Enter ... Operation: T E O C A L I

I have tried to get interested in the gym. It's not my scene. Too many mirrors and posers (my apologies to all you gym-junkies) for mine. So, after talking to a friend of mine who had recently bought a road (racing) bike, I thought, "That's it! I'll buy a bloody bike. Stuff pedalling one that sits in one spot, in front of a bunch of TVs. I'll get one that actually goes somewhere!Ē And so, here I am with a brand new bike ... but no idea how to get the best out of it (yet) and no idea where to ride it (yet).

Which, Iím hoping, is where you guys come in?

My friend tried so hard to talk me into buying a road bike, so that we could ride together, but I knew I would quickly tire of the glimmering highway. I loved riding trails as a kid, and now that I have splashed out and bought myself a nice bike (and a bunch of accessories of course ... remember, I'm starting from scratch) I am just really excited about having some fun again. Oh, and losing some weight, of course.

Um, what else? How about some trivial ďlikesĒ and ďdislikesĒ of mine, and thatíll do, eh?

I like watching sports (mostly on TV) and movies, but I donít read many books. I like cooking and eating Chinese food (hence the 230lb frame!). I love music (I'm actually a pretty handy rock drummer ... I played in bands from the age of 18 until I was 30) but donít listen to enough anymore. I guess I'm into mostly rock, but I love so many different styles. Donít do much Hip Hop though. I love the beach but donít like the wind or the sand. I love to talk but I'm not a great listener. I canít stand bullies and big noters. Oh, and I'm always late. Gotta work on that.

Anyway, thatís it. Enough of my drivel. I am looking forward to picking your brains and tapping into all of your experience guys.

Cheers.

Welcome to BF! What a great introduction!

Congrats on your new bike. Hopefully some of the folks in the ANZ and Mountain Biking forums can help you get going.

Please feel free to visit us in Foo when you want to chat about non-bike things too.

Hello Hotspur, check out the Clydesdales/Athenas forum as well. They will do their best to get you motivated and head out the door instead of settling in in front of the telly.

Welcome to BF!
