Hailing from Edmonton, AB

Hi!

I'm new here, and have been scouring this thick forum for the last couple days.

I'm from Edmonton, AB Canada and just started biking to work last week. Up till the End of Dec 07, I was living in Osaka, Japan for the year. While I was there, I took up the love of not relying on a car. My wife and I biked on our 'flying nun' -style bikes everywhere or sometimes took the train for farther distances. Since being back, I've been reluctant to do much outside with the cold change I've been facing. As soon as it started to warm up I've been biking to work. It's a nice 15km bike ride to work. Right now, I'm using my father-in-law's bike until I figure out what I need / want. Before going to Japan I didn't really bike all that often, so the variety and lifestyle is quite new to me. I'm right now in between getting a cyclo or mountain bike, but I'm doing more research to figure out what compromises I need to make. I've saved up some money, and want to make a good decision that will last some years.

It's great just being able to bike places whenever possible, and finding out about this forum has been great!

I have to say thanks to the members of the board already who are making the forum a great resource for newcomers like me.

Cheers,

Shivaan

Well shucks EH...

It was rather funny as I was just talking to Shivaan on the phone then checked BF while I was taking my lunch break and saw his post... small world huh?

Anyone who rides and commutes in Edmonton should really know their way down to our shop and besides being able to teach folks how to fix and even build up bikes from scratch, we organize a host of social activities too.

I'm looking forward to Tuesday as well.

Hey Sixty Fiver and East Hill!

Definitely excited for tomorrow. It is pretty hilarious how small a world we live in!

Thanks for the welcome from both of you. The forum has been amazing with helping me on my newbie questions.

It's the joy of the internet, to discover how close we can be, and yet sometimes be so far apart. The internet makes it so easy for like-minded people to find each other.

We are running a little short on vintage bikes at the moment but the season is still young... Mrs Noire just got a simple older department store bike of reasonable quality for a crazy price.

I told noire that I can also hook him up with some Edmonton riders (my gang) as we do a bunch of off roading and road biking a la vintage, the EBC stages some nice impromptu social rides, and I always help arrange a number of century rides (socials) during the season that anyone in half decent shape could participate in.

This city is pretty passionate about cycling in all it's myriad forms and in the summer there are few places that can offer a person more... we have a massive parks system that is a joy to ride through and doing this takes the better part of a day. You still won't see it all and there are places that only a few people know about...

I might just have to break out the mountain bike and take the off road route to work today...

Wow! I gotta say, Sixty Fiver is as top-notch a guy as they can get. Firstly, worked some crazy long time and serious effort fixing up a beauty of a ride (well, beast when it's got the mtb tires on ). Still can't believe I acquired it. Then, he takes me on tour of one of the coolest trails I've been on (Not that I've been on many, but hey, I had a permagrin that whole night after!) It started my weekend off perfectly. The trail really makes me appreciate living in Edmonton. I'm hoping to take Mrs. Noire ( ;P ) and my brother to the trail tomorrow. But I'll be opting for shorts this round, jeans and trail just didn't fly so well

The bike is doing awesome. I went yesterday and grabbed a few things for it like an LED light, a multitool, and a lock. Wow, MEC was crazy busy on Saturday.

Today, I gave Jenny (the bike's) a good wash down and she's looking even more perty.

Tuesday will be my first round with the commuter tires on it when I take Jenny to work. YAYE! I get to show off my new gal.

We regard Sixty Fiver as a BikeForums treasure . You are lucky to meet him in person! Many of us were looking forward to meeting him on his planned trip to Portland for the NAHBS. Unfortunately for all of us, he hurt his back and could not make it .

Enjoy your ride!
