Noob Phoenix --> Austin
My wife and I are moving from Phoenix to Austin and we're going to rid ourselves of one car in the process. She works from home, and I plan on getting around on a bike. I used to commute about 6 miles to and from school on a Raleigh M-50 with continental slicks before it got stolen. My commute in Austin will be between 6 and 16 miles one-way so I'll probably make use of the bike-friendly bus transit as well. I'll be working at UT so I ride free.
I joined here to research commuting bicycles and I've found some good info so far. Right now I'm considering the Giant Trans Send EX, the Novara Transfer and the Novara Fusion. I'm also considering picking up something on Craigslist when I get to Austin if I can find a frame that fits my short stature.

Check out the Commuting forum if you haven't already found it. Lots of good tips from the folks who know commuting!

I don't have cats. I have a greyhound who is a bit too fond of them so we stick to dogs.
Mad calico jack is a silly moniker that came about when I grew my beard out. It has multi-colored hairs. I'm somewhat fond of pirates, so my wife called me mad calico jack as a pirate name. Interestingly enough I found out later that a very famous pirate, Jack Rackham, was also known as calico jack. Anyway, it just kind of stuck.
I've been sifting through the commuting forum. There is a ton of good information about bikes and gear. I'll wait until I get to Austin at the end of July to buy anything. No sense buying it now and having to move it. In the mean time, I'll stick to the forums to help me put together a shopping list.

Another fan of pirates! We have several of those here . It's a great name. Oh, and when you have time, head down to the Foo forum, and put up a picture of your greyhound. There are quite a few members who have greyhounds as well.
