Sylens,

You've come to the right place.

Describe your biking asperations and price range for the new bike.

Stick around and enjoy.

Welcome to the forums Sylens. Pretty informative place here, and usually non-hostile (most of the time). You will get a ton of varied opinions and meet some great people from all over the world. It sometimes amazes me that so many different regions of the world have so much in common.

As far as your bike goes, I suggest doing a lot of research before you purchase a bike. In the meantime, just get out and ride.

There are so many different styles to choose from these days. Road, Tri, Time-Trial, Hybrids, Comfort, Commuters, Touring, Downhill, Slalom, Trials, Cross-Country, Free-Ride,...the list goes on. It can get so confusing. The best thing is to determine what style of riding you prefer, then get a bike for that type of riding.

Keep in mind, with all these specialties going around it can get crazy and there are still many bikes suited to all-around riding. Good luck and welcome again!

Heck yeah!! Another score for the Mountain bike forum!!! Just kidding. Welcome to the forums!! When you start shopping for bikes, post all your questions here!!! I can answer them!! Note the "I" ok, the only person you need to listen to is me. If you listen to the other guys it will just be more confusing...Just kidding!! actually, it would best serve you to NOT listen to me!! HA HA!! Welcome to the forums!!

Hi Sylens and welcome to the forum.
I am also from Ontario and live in Matheson which is up near Timmins.
Where are you from?

Mike

wow ... what a great response .. talk about a welcome wagon :D

Thanks guys .... well here's a brief description of myself

Where I live : Hamilton, Ontario (student life) ,Thornhill, Ontario (suburban life)

What I enjoy : Speed (in any variety), VWs, my CR125, snowboarding, big hits, lots of air and the occasional crash to remind me I am alive (school makes me forget sometimes ;) )

What turned me onto mountain biking : Well a good buddy of mine rides religously and was telling me the transition from moto-x to mountain biking is not that large a learning curve ...... so I tried it out in Haliburton and discovered he was 100% correct ... so I figure it something new to try ....

Hope to accomplish : increased physical fitness, a new technical ability and a new toy to play with ...

talk with y'all soon

ps. from my experience on other message boards there are things that you should avoid (like ask repetitive questions) or basic newbie no-nos .... anything I should be aware of ???

Welcome aboard Sylens.

About the only unwritten rule I've seen in action is:
Don't give authoritative technical advice or specifications unless you are 100% sure of your facts. There are some techno wizards on list who will shoot you down in flames if you post bollocks as facts! ;)

Which is a good thing really, otherwise folk will be making decisions based on bad data.

ie: Acceleration due to gravity is 9 metres per second squared, therefore if you turn your cycle around you can coast uphill.

I may now be zapped for getting the numbers wrong, and talking nonsense.

Hey Sylens

Do you know Marc St. Jean or anyone else from Freewheel Cycle down there? Marc is now living in Guelph for the last few months but he was riding with them all the time.

That's because we love to spend other people's money!!!:D

fubar5 12-04-01 04:23 PM

Sylens, you can ask a question as many times as you want!! We will just stop answering!! HA HA HA!!! Just Kiding. I have asked so many questions I lost count, and I kept getting answers. There is a wealth of information here in the form of users, so ask away!!!

So you like pretty aggresive mountain biking? I am leaning in that direction myslef. I don't have a whole lot of experience, but I'm planning on building some stuff out at my local trail.

velocipedio 12-04-01 05:01 PM

Sylens... You're at McMAster, I presume? I have family in Dundas, if that means anything...

The truth is that this is probably the most easy-going and hospitable forum that I have ever visited. Sure, some of us are technogeeks and even velosnobs, but I'm constantly amazed at how well people get along. The one recent exception was when one user started posting pictures of massive 4x4 suburban umbilical vehicles. Got up some people's noses. Got up mine.

As for the newbie questions, you'll be surprised at how patiently and effectively many users will answer your questions. We were all novices once and I think there's a general consensus that there's always room in for one more cyclist, both here and in the worldwide two-wheeled community. [How wide? Well, just on this board, we have people from the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, Kenya and Sweden.]

Repetitive, one-line posts? That's something you should ask Fubar about. ;)

Hi Sylens, ask away, you'll probably ask a question I havn't even thought of yet!
