New Old Guy

Hi,
I am a 60 year old Clydesdale riding both road and MTB in order to lose some pounds. I am currently riding one of the two at least 1 hour per day. I have lost about 8 lbs in about six weeks of fairly often riding and have also moved to a low fat diet with lots of chicken.

The weight seems to be coming off pretty slow so far but I am encouraged by the post in this form and will continue to ride until I lose from 236, to my goal of 175. I purchased both my bikes at a LBS and they are a KHS Tuscon 2007 and a KHS Flite 700 2007. I purchased the Tucson but kept riding it on the road, so I purchased the road bike. I am in outside sales and I travel a lot and carry a bike while I am on the road so I don't miss any days.

I am pretty cheap, so I purchase riding shirts at TJ Max or Marshalls for usually under $10. I got my shorts ar REI on sale for about $35 each. Shoes at REI on sale My wife is pretty conceerned out me riding because someone in the neighborhood was riding and crashed breaking his neck. He is ok, but she wants me to increase my life insurance and get disability insurance.

I am pretty much a lone rider, but I am planning on riding a few days of BRAG, a state road ride for 7 days averaging 60 miles per day. I have increased my riding the last week from 6-10 miles per day to 10 to 15 miles per day. I would like to ride the whole week but I need to work.

Welcome, digby, to BikeForums.

Tell your wife not to worry...or to make you buy more life insurance than you really need. Cycling is NOT that dangerous. In fact, why not encourage her to join you?

Hi, Don't worry about the speed the weight still comes off, just keep doing what your doing and enjoying it. I went from 230 to 170, though it did take a bit longer than I had hoped but I didn't get stretch marks. I did get a hernia with some heavy lifting and needed to under go surgery as a result of having gained the weight to begin with and then thinking after I had lost it that I was once again as young as I felt. Therefore please don't over do anything or feel that needing a hand with something is to trivial to ask for help. It is better to be strong enough to assist in something than to be to weak to do anything at all.

Cycling is a GREAT family activity. Not only that, but if she's with you, she will be able to call for help ;) .

I am joking about that--you are more likely to have a heart attack by sitting around in front of a television screen than you are likely to get hurt by cycling. Serious injury can occur to all of us--especially if one is a driver!

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

Have you considered taking a BikeEd class to learn safe cycling skills. I'm a BikeEd instructor so my wife doesn't really worry about me whether I'm doing a Sat/Sun ride or bike commuting to work.

BRAG? What part of Georgia do you live in? When you get a chance stop by the Southeast regional subforum and introduce yourself to the locals.

Brag

I live in Snellvile and will probably ride from Oxford to Dublin. I have a couple of buddies who are doing the whole, week but as I said June is a big month for me work wise and I can't take a full week off.

I rode 20 miles today and felt great. Hands are a little sore but every thing else is fine.

I actually live halfway between Snellville and Stone Mountain. Tomorrow I plan to ride from Stone Mountain to Decatur on the PATH trail.

Regarding the clothing. I bought Nike, Body Glove, New Balance and Addais jerseys. I just couldn't pass them up. For MTB I ride in shorts with padded riding underwear. I don't think I could be much more comfortable than I am now. If I was I would fall asleep.
