Newbie looking for help choosing the right bike.

Greetings from another Newbie. I am a in need of some help choosing the right road bicycle. I weigh 275 lbs. and am 6'-3" . I have been riding about once a week between 40 & 50 miles in the Santa Monica Mountains of So. Cal. I usually ride alone or with one person, and do not ever want to race. My two bicycles are Hybrids; A Marin, San Rafeal, and a more recent addition of a Trek 7500 Multi Track. I love the Trek, especially since I finally got the clipless SPD pedals and some Canari Baggies.I want to ride much more often, and more miles, and think I should move up to a road bike, however I am getting all kinds of different input from everyone I talk to at the bike stores. I would like to spend up to $2,000 for the right bike, and have a few questions that I would appreciate if anyone would give me their input. I will get fitted for the proper size, and want to buy new. Not necessarily the lightest weight bike, but something that will not break due to my size.
Is a Carbon Bike, or Carbon fork & seat post a wise choice?
Is the Trek 1600 a wise choice of bike, with good components?
I see people posting about heavy guys getting better wheel sets. My Trek wheels are basic Bontrager SSR 24 spokes, and I have never had any problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
R

Hi R, definitely talk to the Clydes about the road bikes which are good for taller and heavier riders.

If you aren't having any issues with your current wheels, that's good.

I don't know about a full carbon bike, and you might actually want to look into something with a steel frame.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

Try a Specialized Roubaix and get deep Vee rims with 36 spokes. Also get a Park tensiometer and make sure the tension is up to the rim manufacturers recommended tension and that the tension is even around the wheel.

You're welcome. The Clydes are a great bunch of folks, too. They will be happy to help you as well.
