Hi from Michigan

Hi! I used to bike everywhere some years ago when I lived in Kansas, but since I've moved to Michigan I've been walking everywhere - better exercise (burns more calories) and the garage door came off the track every time I tried to get the bike out.

I've decided to go back to the bike. The government's stimulus check bought us a new garage door. Plus, I had twins last fall and couldn't walk while I was pregnant (I was as wide as I was tall), so I'm really out of shape now. And, with the twins, time is more important to me these days than burning calories.

Since I'm not as limber as I was when I bought my bike about 15 years ago (I'm 42 - why does it seem like the old-age sore joints suddenly appeared overnight???), the hubby said I could get a new one. I thought I'd join the bike forums to get some advice.

Hi, all!

Hello tuind13, walking is great exercise, but so is cycling, and it can be a little easier on the joints. Plus, when the twins get old enough, you can haul them around in a trailer, and you will get PLENTY of exercise from that :) .

What kind of bike are you looking for/at?

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

Cycling is indeed much easier on your body than walking or running. Low impact. Plus you get to go further and see more of the beauty around you.

Oh and...Welcome to Bike Forums! :)

I'm looking for something with a step-through frame and just enough gears to get me around. Work, daycare, the library are all within a mile of home. I'm more interested in comfort than speed - my bod is no longer as aerodynamic as it used to be. Leaning forward post-pregnancy leaves me really winded. My current bike has a men's frame and my leg is less inclined to swing over the back these days. I'm also looking for something that comes with a rack and fenders already installed. I'm short and it was a pain to retrofit the current bike with a rack. Because of the short seat tube, the rack attached rather wacky and is at a wierd angle, making it difficult to carry stuff.

The new bike will be our second car. Eventually, I plan to tow the kids around. Right now their reaction to seeing each other is to pull hair and poke eyes, so leaving them alone in a pod is probably not the best idea for keeping child services at bay. ;) Someday, though....

I'll post something in the commuter section asking for some advice.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
