Starting to really get into Biking.

My name is nathan, I am a youngin, 18 and graduating high school later today. I am a part time mechanic, i have always been into cars but just recently i am starting to get into biking. About a month ago i bought a 10 spd huffy carrera i found on craigslist for $20 dollars. In the last month ive probably put about 250+ miles on it which is alot for me but probably not much for you guys. I am lucky to living a 1/4 mile away from a bike path that can take me wherever i need to go. After yesterdays ride about 30-40 miles through some rough urban areas that would have been more suitable for a mountain bike my rear brake became mangled and i think its time for an upgrade as many other things on the bike are not up to par. I rode my 20 dollar bike enough so that i could justify buying a nicer one so if anyone has any suggestions on what bike to get next for around 500 or less let me know, I am 6' tall and preffer to be high off the ground so a long wheelbase or big bike is preffered.

Hello Nathan, are you looking for another road bike, mountain bike, perhaps a cross bike?

Do you know what size you ride?

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

Hi Nathan, and congrats on graduating!

Yup, it sounds like you are ready for a new machine for sure. For your price point, I'd look for a used hardtail mountain bike. You can get a lot of used hardtail for $500! If you can't find any used, you can still go with a new hardtail mtb. There are some that will meet your budget, and you can always upgrade components as you go.

Oh yeah .......... many welcomes to BikeForums!

Oh, i forgot to mention i am looking for a road bike, Im not sure what size i ride but bigger is probably better. Me and my dad just went to a bike shop to look at a few because he was considering getting me one for graduation but he didn't know how expensive a good bike is now days and was expecting to find them for 250-500 dollars. I was able to fix my brakes today and they are doing pretty good. I may just fix my old POS up a little with some new parts and keep riding it til it dies because it definately has some miles left in it. I have a motorcycle worth around 1600 so i may sell that and get a nice $1000 dollar road bike, we will see.

Thanks for the warm welcome and ill post some pics of my old huffy in a second.

Well, you can find a nice road bike for that amount of money if you hang out on Craigslist, and if you love vintage bikes .

Otherwise, it's awfully hard to find a decent machine for that amount of money!
