New here from TX

Just wanted to say Hi to everyone here on the forums. I've been recreationally cycling for years, but I've decided to get into road cycling as a serious hobby. My husband and I divorced this year, so my biggest challenge will be getting enough cycling time while not neglecting my kiddos! They're old enough though to enjoy recreational cycling together at least. I'd love to teach them to enjoy cycling...

Anyway, I'm in Arlington, TX - a whopping three miles away from my lbs, which may end up being dangerous for my checkbook! I'm buying my first road bike as soon as I get my tax rebate check. So excited!

Hi everyone!

Welcome to BikeForums! What brands and models are you looking at so far for the road bike? There are a lot of road cyclists here in the Dallas area, and lots of us here on BikeForums as well. Not sure about Arlington in particular though. Be sure to stop by the Texas Regional forum soon and say hello there as well.

Thanks for the welcome! So far, I've been looking at Specialized and a Trek. I can't remember which models, but they're in the $800-$900 range. As a newbie, I don't want to break the bank on my first road bike. I'm going to go test ride them when it gets closer to the end of the month. I'm afraid I'll love them so much that I'll hate being stuck with my mountain bike till I get my tax rebate!

I will definitely check out the TX Regional forum!

After a quick peak at the Trek and Specialized websites, it seems Trek has started specing lower end gear on their entry level models. Appears that the Specalized is likely going to be the better value in that price range. The Road Cycling forum has a lot of good information about models at different price points. Don't be afraid to ask questions either. If you have any problems, any member with a (one or more) blue star next to their name is a Moderator or Admin, we'll be happy to help.

Bummer about the divorce, but cycling will help you and the kids channel some energy into things that are better for you both physically and mentally.

And, you are fairly close to some great people there in TX who can help you get organised!

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

Thanks for the welcome! I'll definitely keep that in mind regarding the Specialized vs. Trek.

The divorce is ok - both of us are happier, so that's really what matters. I can't WAIT to get my road bike!!

Welcome to the forums. Check into the Texas forum when you get a chance. I hear tell there's an invitation-only women's forum here as well.

Welcome to the Forums from another fellow Texan. As the father of two boys I can fully appreciate your trouble balancing family time as a parent with adult recreational time. Best of luck.
