Hello from Decatur Alabama
Hi all. I've been lurking for a few weeks, gleaning as much information as I can to help my decisions in getting back into cycling. I'm a 51 year old clydesdale that's been away from cycling for quite a few years.
I've been very interested in commuting for some time now, but I've been balking because of the necessity of crossing two major highways. The commute is 7.1 miles one way - easily do-able once I got my doubts behind me. So I started riding about 10 miles a day for the past few weeks on an xmart mtb a friend gave me while shopping for a decent commuter.
The bike I settled on for my commuter is an older Gary Fisher Tassajara, steel frame without shocks, with michelin country rock tires.
I'm loving riding again, and I'm already looking forward to picking up a road bike later!

Welcome from a neighbor in Decatur, Georgia. Glad you found us.
My wife and I have considered moving to the Decatur/Huntsville area when she retires at the end of the year.
What's the riding like - road bikes only - over your way?
She's also concerned about tornados. How often do they zip through your area?

Tornadoes? Well, there's an extensive network of warning sirens throughout North Alabama, and we are alerted quite a bit it seems, but it's usually just a minor inconvenience you're glad to put up with just in case! The occasions when there is activity, you certainly get plenty of coverage from the local stations if you want to track movement. Get a weather radio and don't worry too much about it. Hope to see you on the road!

Hi seenoweevil, have you managed to get out there and try any commuting yet? What are you riding?
