Back in the saddle again-wichita kansas

I was an avid cyclist when I was younger. I still have my old Cannondale touring bike and my old Specialized Hardrock from way back then. The Hardrock is one of them that had the slightly ovaled chain rings. Several things made me stop cycling. Work, wife and kids. I also reached a point with my epilepsy where my seizures were not controlled from about 1997 to 2002.

On July 31st it will have been 5 years since I have had a seizure. Has a lot to do with finding the right doctor who wanted to do more then try another drug. I started cycling again two years ago. I aired up the tires, oiled the chain and rode my old Specialized Hardrock. Then last year I went and bought a new Specialized Rockhopper. I had rode a friends mountain bike with suspension and was hooked. I have been riding trails since then. I also bought some tires and tuned up my old Cannondale touring bike. I tried to fix my other road bike but found it needs a whole new set of components. I rode a 62 mile ride last year to raise money for epilepsy and averaged 19.5 mph.

Just over a month ago I purchased another new bike. I rode a fixie when I was on a trip to Portland Maine this last fall and was sold on it. I intended to convert my old Cannondale Black Lightning to a fixie but have just been slammed working overtime this year. So instead I just bought a new Capo. The Black Lightening will still be converted at some point.

Now I commute to work and back as long as the temp is above 20 and it is not storming. I dont care to ride with lightning. It is 6 miles from my home to work. Often I take a longer route coming home. Last year between commuting, exercise, club rides, and off road, I rode over 5500 miles.

I hope that maybe I can share my little bit of knowledge and gain much more from others on this forum.

Hello bicycleptic, I have a friend with epilepsy who I have tried to convince to start riding a bike, but he still doesn't have his seizures under control . He had gone one year without a seizure and started driving, and the same day he had a seizure and narrowly avoided killing someone (he was in a head-on collision with another motorist). Sad, because I think he would enjoy the riding, and it would certainly expand his ability to move around.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !
