Hello from Michigan

I've been bicycling to work "for serious" for nearly a year now. The difference in my health and outlook has been pretty dramatic. It's also been highly educational. There is nothing like traffic to motivate one to study safe habits and practice them religiously. As I've had questions about this or that, somehow, Google keeps bringing me back to Bike Forums, and so I figured it was time to join.

I live in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and commute 4.5 miles one way to Southfield. The route is pretty quiet for Southeast Michigan. As I've gotten comfortable, I've found reasons to love my hybrid and a few limitations. Wind is trouble. So, while I love my Truck Bike (Giant Cypress DX with a few accessories), I figured it was time for a weekend sports bike. Oddly, my wife agreed (buying used and comparing the prices to new might have had something to do with it). So, now I'm the proud owner of Schwinn Paramount Series 5. It is one sweet ride, if a bit scary. So, more to learn.

Happy riding!

Glad to meet you, Ben. I'm new here, too, and I just bought myself a new road bike (Giant OCR1W). The hope is to find some nice rides and do a triathlon (yikes!). I'm north of you in Grand Blanc.

Ride on,
Lisa

Yay for Michigan!

Thanks for the welcome. One of our friends from New York laughed at the term "Michiganders", but, hey, we've got to stick together, right?

Isn't there a ride through Detroit past the historic homes? I think I saw something on the League of Michigan Bicyclists' calendar. That would be fun. I did get to the Wolverine 200 on Belle Isle. That was great, although, 25 miles on a too soft saddle and I was numb and done. Saddle problem is fixed now.

I don't know much up the Grand Blanc / Flint way. I was car- and hotel-bound for the year my job took me up that way. It's pretty though.

Happy trails!

Hello from Dearborn, Michigan! I ride my bike mainly to work, at Ford Motor Credit headquarters, three miles along Michigan Avenue (on the sidewalk). Once on a commute home, a guy who pulled up on his bike alongside said he worked at the Rouge Truck Plant and lived in Westland, a commute of 13 miles.

Hi zdog,

I'm a former Michigander, now living in Boston since 1977, and I visit and ride in the Fraser, MI area two or three times a year. I was glad to read that the Wolverine 200 is still occuring on Belle Isle. I rode it in about 1970, all 200 miles on a Schwinn Suburban. Early in the ride, a guy was dismounting from his penny farthing bike and fell on my wheel and bent it. My mother went to a bike shop and bought me a new one so I could finish.

I haven't ridden out in the the northern suburbs along Woodward, or west of it, but sometime when I'm in Michigan and in training for a century, I think I'll go out that way. I recently found out that the I-696 service drive is a pretty good east-west cycling corridor.
