Hello from Haute Savoie, France

I've been cycling (touring, mainly) for about 25 years. My travels have taken me on roads from Hawaii to Europe. I just discovered this forum and thought I would introduce myself. I live in Haute Savoie, France (the French alps) and work in Geneva, Switzerland. I often commute to work on my Cannondale T700. It's not as far as it sounds, only 20km each way! I've done a number of week long tours (supported), but I'd like to do something longer. I'm hoping to find other tourists to share tips, ideas, and to trade stories.

I'll have to take photos and post them. My commute rolls along some back roads in France, across the Swiss border at an unmanned border crossing (for pedestrians and bicycles only), past Swiss farmland, then the last 5km are along lake Geneva to Geneva's international district where I work. The commute is about 6km longer than the most direct route, but much more scenic (and with less traffic too). Along the way, I have nice views of the Aravis, Jura, and Mont Blanc mountain chains. On a clear day, I can see Mont Blanc (4810m/15781ft high) about 80km to the east. Despite all the mountains, my ride is mostly flat. Just little rolling hills no more than 200m (650ft) high.

Right now, Switzerland is celebrating its national holiday. The lake shore around Geneva has become an amusement park with rides and games. My ride around the lake is still quite nice in the morning since the rides are closed at that time and there are very few people, but my commute home has become very slow for the first 5km due to the throngs of people enjoying the amusement park. I'm going to have to modify my commute home for the next month as dodging people for 5km is tiring and a bit unsafe.

Jeff
