The choice:

The background:
I'm just getting back into biking and have decided that the cyclocross style will work best for my needs. I've spent hours searching and reading on the web to try to get an education on bikes and components. I bought a Motobecane in 1972 (still have it) and put a lot of miles on it, so I found them on the web. Understand its not the same company as 1972.
I was all set to order the Motobecane Fantom Cross but then visited a Performance Bike store locally and they have a Fuji Cross Comp on sale that puts it $50 higher but has lifetime adjustments etc and no set-up cost. (I would have already ordered the MTB but it took all week to get answers to two email and if I have had my questions answered more promptly it would have been a done deal.)
I need help with:
> Given the Brands and components, which is a better bike? The service tech at Performance said the Fuji drivetrain with 105/Ultegra was hands down better.
I researched all and it seems the MTB Vuelta XRP Pro offered wheels are better than the Alex DC 19.
> What is better to trade off, the wheels or drive train?
> Is there even a trade-off on the wheels.
FYI, the Fuji is $849 + $42 tax = 891, MTB is $799 delivered, but I may need to spend $50-100 on set-up. I can test ride the Fuji and will this afternoon, obviously not the MTB.
The sale at Performance ends today so I really would appreciate feedback!

This is true.
You may find that the wheels don't make a big difference to you, especially since your needs indicate that you need a tougher wheel.
You can test ride the Fuji today for fit as well--an extremely important factor.
It's your call, but the Fuji is calling...
