Would appreciate help today bike buying decision
Hi All -
The choice:
Motobecane Fantom Cross: Aluminum frame with carbon fork, Crankset TruVativ Elita Cross GXP External Bottom Bracket, CNC'D 39/48 Chainrings, Nickel/Silver, Bottom Bracket TruVativ GXP External cartridge bearing Front Derailleur Shimano Tiagra, Rear Derailleur Shimano 105 RD5600, Shifters Shimano Tiagra 9-speed, Cassette/Freewheel SRAM PG950, 9-speed, 12-26T, Front & Rear Wheels/Hub Newest Vuelta XRP Pro with precision bearing and lighter radial/cross lacing
Fuji Cross Comp: Aluminum frame with carbon fork, Crankset FSA Gossamer, 6061 forged alloy with 7075 alloy CNC 38/48T chainrings, Bottom bracket FSA Ultimax ISIS sealed cartridge, 109.5mm, Front derailleur Shimano 105, 28.6mm, Rear derailleur Shimano Ultegra, 9-speed Shifters Shimano 105 9-speed Shifter/Brake, Flight Deck compatible, Cassette/freewheel SRAM PG-950, 9-speed cassette, 12/26, Front & Rear wheels Alex DC 19
The background:
I'm just getting back into biking and have decided that the cyclocross style will work best for my needs. I've spent hours searching and reading on the web to try to get an education on bikes and components. I bought a Motobecane in 1972 (still have it) and put a lot of miles on it, so I found them on the web. Understand its not the same company as 1972.
I was all set to order the Motobecane Fantom Cross but then visited a Performance Bike store locally and they have a Fuji Cross Comp on sale that puts it $50 higher but has lifetime adjustments etc and no set-up cost. (I would have already ordered the MTB but it took all week to get answers to two email and if I have had my questions answered more promptly it would have been a done deal.)
I need help with:
> Given the Brands and components, which is a better bike? The service tech at Performance said the Fuji drivetrain with 105/Ultegra was hands down better.
I researched all and it seems the MTB Vuelta XRP Pro offered wheels are better than the Alex DC 19.
> What is better to trade off, the wheels or drive train?
> Is there even a trade-off on the wheels.
FYI, the Fuji is $849 + $42 tax = 891, MTB is $799 delivered, but I may need to spend $50-100 on set-up. I can test ride the Fuji and will this afternoon, obviously not the MTB.
The sale at Performance ends today so I really would appreciate feedback!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can share expertise!!!

This is true.
You may find that the wheels don't make a big difference to you, especially since your needs indicate that you need a tougher wheel.
You can test ride the Fuji today for fit as well--an extremely important factor.
It's your call, but the Fuji is calling...
Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !
