Welcome to the forums.
I bought my first road bike in Oceanside, a 1979 Schwinn LeTour IV, and road it around mainside, and down to work near where the Air Wing was (they were planning on moving the computer center to mainside shortly after I left). Who would have thought I would forget the area numbers after only 25 or 30 years...
Used to work at the ASC as a computer operator for MCB Camp Pendleton, and as a grunt for K Co 3/7 out at Camp San Mateo before I re-enlisted.
The Gunney I worked for at the ASC invited me down to watch the races at the velodrome in San Diego a few times, it was a lot of fun to watch the track racers. You should try it if you haven't yet.
Outside the gate near mainside, about 1/2 mile off base if you look up the hill... there was a housing development going in the last time I was in the area a couple of years ago... but there was an old hill, and on top of the hill was a huge boulder. Once upon a time, there was a group of Marines who used to party near the bottom of that boulder after getting off from the computer center's swing shift. One young Marine discovered one night that there was a pretty easy way to climb up that rock, and the parties had a new location... for the rest of the time I was there the rock was called St. Darwin's Rock. Did the name stick???
