Howdy from Dallas (Georgia that is!)

I stumbled across your website yesterday and found a lot of your threads very interesting. I am a middle aged 46 year old father of three married to a wonderful wife of 27 years.

Well her goes; I started cycling a year ago this past July. I started out riding a Schwinn comfort bike from Target. I pushed that heavy thing a maximum of 37 miles after riding about 4 ot 5 months and new it was time to step up to a road bike.

I purchased a Motebecane Mirage road bike with a triple chainring and Sora grouping. I have started training for my first century this past May but have realized it may take longer than I planned to build up to 100 miles. I have ridden 54 miles 4 or 5 times now.

I look forward to learning more about conditioning and getting tips/help from the more experienced riders on the forum.

Thanks for the great site.
Brian

Hi Brian and welcome.

At 46 you're still a kid. If I was 46 again I'd take up cyclocross racing this fall. But alas I'm an older kid of 63.

If you're doing 50 mile rides you're ready for your first metric century (100 km or 62 miles). There are lots of them coming up. Most organized rides that are a century usually offer a metric century option. I did my first metric century when I got back into cycling in 2000. I was 55 at the time. Did the Lewis Grizzard Memorial Ride and plan on doing it again this year.

Stop by the Southeast Regional subforum and say hello to the locals.

Thanks for the encouragment Ron; I am going to do a stretch ride and try to make the 62 mile mark soon. My wife and I just dropped my oldest son off at Valdosta State University today and got him moved into his dorm. It was an exciting and emotional time for my wife and I.
Even though we were out of town I did get a 30 minute workout on the stationary bike in the hotels workout room. I didn't completely slack off.
East Hill thanks for the welcome also.
