A bit of introduction; I haven't worked on a bicycle since I was a kid, but a friend just bought a Western Flyer 24" 3 wheel 3 speed girl's bicycle. I get the job of restoring it and finding history. This one came from Western Auto stores.
I'd like as much information as anyone can give about repair & maintenance, history, parts availability, workshop manuals, etc. I've never worked on a 3 speed drive train.
The bike looks complete, but I don't know if it was supposed to have a hand brake or if braking was accomplished by turning the pedal backwards. There's a hole in the fork that looks like it may have been for a brake mount, but there's no brake handle or cable. The 3 speed handle only appears to have 2 positions, though I never tried shifting on the go, since the spokes are all loose & the tires flat.
When I finish this bike, my friend will ride it to town & back often, so I'll want lights & a mirror on it. Any ideas there? It does have a basket mounted between the rear wheels.
I'm anxious to get started, so will be looking for replies. Thanks, everyone.
