Hello from Malaysia

Great forum, glad I found you all.

I am a Canadian, but have been living in Malaysia for the past 11 years.

I have always loved cycling, but mostly by myself or with the odd friend. In high school it was my transport. After school i did a tour from Toronto out to halifax for a few weeks. Bought a nice campy road bike after that, but after dropping it a few times in the streetcar tracks of Toronto i switched to a mountain bike.

Over here in Malaysia i get out for 30k afternoon rides up the sandy coast of the South China Sea. I have been using a Giant ATX 770 for the past 9 years, no complaints, but time for something new.

Hope to get to know some of you better as time goes on.

Hello, trg!

Wait a second, you gave up a Campy road bike for a mountain bike?!? Yes well, as long as that streetcar did its thing totally, and there was no sign of life... ;)

I think there are a few here that are from Toronto also.

Again WELCOME! You'll find us a pretty friendly group with a diversity of ideas and experiences to share. I hope you have some time to scan back through the archives to asquaint yourself with what is happening here.

Hi, trg, welcome to the BFC.

Nice to hear from another Canuck, even if you don't have to endure winter!

I'd like to see some pics of your rides in Malaysia.

Welcome to the forum trg! You'll love this forum.

Interesting enough I was reading about two Americans who are planning to ride around the world next year. I believe they may be traveling through Malaysia. They propose an interesting and unique opportunity to locals in the areas they pass through. Check it out @ www.peacepedalers.com. This might be of interest to many out there.

Thank you all for your warm welcome

My connection is somtimes iffy at work, so it has taken me a few days to get some time to post a reply to some of your comments (if you are still interested )

DnvrFox, you asked why Malaysia? Well, I met a Malaysian woman in university, and eventually moved here and am teaching at a college.

I enjoyed visiting your site by the way.

VELO, I only half gave up that campy road bike. Instead of bringing it half way around the planet, I gave it to a very good friend - so it still had a home.

I hope to put together some pics and stories of the rides here, and when i do you all will be the first to hear about it.

Okay, I can accept that. ;) I'm sure that friend is one happy camper...

I briefly visited Malaysia some years ago and hitchhicked up the east coast to Thailand. Beeeeutiful place. You're obviously not in KL, so where are you?

Ever visited Australie? We're practically neighbours.

Allister, I live right along your route!

You must have passed through Kuala Terengganu, very quiet town right on the sea. I live a few kilometres north of the town, about 200 metres from the beach, me and the kids spend some of our afternoons there, a 3 min walk through coconut groves from the house.

I like big -orderly- cities, but somehow i feel very comfortable here. Great for cycling.

I haven't visited your neck of the woods yet, but some day.....

Thanks for writing.
