Anyone ever get stung by a bee while cycling?

Hi, I'm kind of new here. The other day I was cycling, doing about 28 kph into a bit of a headwind and all of the sudden a bee flew right into my mouth, got wedged between my top and bottom teeth and as I spit it out it stung my lip. That was pretty annoying. Anyone know if this happens often?

Twice in 12 months. The first time, last summer, I went into anaphlaxis and ended up in the ER where the nice man in the white coat told me "Congratulations, you're allergic to bee toxin." Okay, he didn't really say "congratulations." But he did give me a prescription for an Epi-Pen, which came in handy the second time I was stung on a ride, about a month ago.

It's never happened to me in almost 40 years of riding, but it has happened to others I know, including my own daughter riding just behind me earlier this summer, right on the lip.

It never occurred to me before this, but I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep a Benadryl tablet in the seat bag for emergencies.

Hasn't happened to me personally but I've read on these boards that some have had those pesky things get stuck in their helmet holes and nail them right in the melon....

BTW - Welcome to the forums.

Only once, two summers ago. It was dusk and I took off my glasses to enjoy the changing light. Rolling at 25 mph. Not thirty seconds later a bee thwacked me in the eye. I didn't know what it was as I skidded to a stop--both my eyes shut due to the blow--it felt like I'd been hit by a good sized rock. Only then did I wipe away the mangled bee from my face. The closest thing I could compare it to was getting kicked in the groin. Really, I had that lay-down-and-whimper sort of feeling. It took a few minutes to get some fight back in me and start rolling again. I had serious swelling for a few days and only after it went down did I figure out where the actual sting was (below the eye). It took 6 months for the little bump to go away. I always ride with glasses now.

Once a bee landed on my jersey.. Its stinger did not fully penetrate my jersey... once in our group, a friends' wife went out for that ocassional ride. She was wearing cargo shorts. It flew up her leg openings. Stung her thigh.. Would that have happened if she had been wearing regular bike shorts.

Once, in almost 30 years of riding. I was test riding a new bike from a shop, and got stung on the side of the nose. Actually, that is the first time I can remember getting stung for about 40 or 50 years.

Hi Sean, as you can see, it's not that unusual an occurence! I have been stung only once whilst riding, on my leg. But, I used to get gnats and whatnot in my eyes all the time until I started wearing glasses.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

That's happened to me driving, a bee flew up my shirt sleeve and stung my back. I thought it was a cigarette, it burned like a bastid! If anyone needs proof of aliens here on earth you need look no further than wasps, I still haven't figured out what purpose they serve except annoying humans.

Had one get caught between my fingers and got stung before I could brush it away. I took a a Junebug in the eye going down a hill at 50km/h. Good thing the four lane road I was on was deserted because I needed every one of those lanes to stay on the bike. I could have suffered a detached retina. I was lucky. I wear glasses just to deflect the bugs. Word of advise. When riding by a swamp keep your mouth shut unless you need the protein.

More common than you can imagine. You are not the only one for sure. For my previous thread on my experience see:
