Back in the Saddle Again in Alabama
Found this place on Google last night looking for reviews on pedals, probably Look since that is what I use to ride. Like my username says, I consider this my "third time" being into bikes. Hell, I don't even have my new bike yet which is a *gasp* Motobecane Record sooooo, I am a shill! LOL. Read that long thread on bikesdirect. Interesting what some think.
1st time biker back in 1970 coming from a Schwinn Continental to some obscure Japanese chrome moly bike with what was new at the time Shimano after they decided to make good stuff rather than cheap junk on Western Auto cheap bikes. Was an early adopter of Dura Ace when Campy was the bomb. Still have my junior competition license from the then sanctioning body Amatuer Bicycling League of America (ABLA). Got into skateboarding and wandered away from bikes (was a bike mechanic and managed a shop too)
2nd time biker from about 1984 to 1993. Some guy was looking to sell his Puegot and while in college for a law degree I was a personal trainer at a Y. I test rode it and almost puked a lung when he took me up a brutal grade....and I was hooked. Ended up with a Cannondale w/ Shimano, sew ups, Looks, etc. Rode with a local team, bust the 20mph club after about 2 years. Did Mt. Mitchell (in the unrestricted entrant days), Bridge to Bridge and other centuries. Did road racing. Got into this new mountain biking "thing" as a winter training tool and ended up pretty much staying in the dirt after a while. Before I knew was the president of the local club building trails and ended up as their race director putting on 500+ rider races. Started a new firm got too busy and wandered away.
Fast forward. 3rd time around. I am oooops at the 50 mark, just got divorced after being fat and miserable for years. Gained 10lbs for every year I was married and have (without a bike even) lost three and a half years of that fat in four months. Want to get back to exercise to lose 70 freakin lbs. but do not want to get back to scrapping weight 160lbs at 6 feet back in the day. More like 180lb. will do fine. I see myself as a sub 20mph, way more social, ride for exercise and fun, metric century kind of person. Have already done the slave to the pace arrow, train like it was a second job thing. Got a BD MB Record as my first dip into the waters. If this bike thing "sticks" for a year then I will go get me some CF Ultegra/Dura Ace bike. I can see a mountain bike in my future too but the road is best to getting back into shape (with a HR monitor). I said too much but that is me. Now a "old fart".

Hi TTR, sometimes the best thing in life is to enjoy life! I am not fast at all, but I do plug away at it, and I love my bikes .
You have quite the interesting stories to tell, and I hope we hear more, and often, from you.
Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like we're from the same era, as I started riding in the 70's too on an old steel Fuji with cheapo SunTour equipment. Didn't even have toe clips or regular cycling shoes. After building and rebuilding the bike several times and still ending up with a 30 lb machine, I graduated to a Viscount bike and then onto Treks and Cannondales. I love Look pedals and have been using them for what seems like ages. Glad to have you here, check out the 50+ forum as we're a bit more low key there.

Hey, yeah, back in the days of "hairnet helmets" and ten speeds. Did my first road race on a borrowed Fuji Junior (was an upgrade from my lugless Schwinn Contenental, heavy!) and bought a Sekine when they were made in Japan. Inexpensive Chro Moly bike but the paint job was awesome. Don't have a lot to spend in high school.
Looking to get back into it with a more leisurely approach. I have busted tail plenty so it is time to be a little more laid back about cycling. It is that FUN thing. Thanks.
