I'm 32 and live in Orange County, CA. I hadn't been on a bike since college until last year when a friend of mine talked me into trying triathlon. So I bought a walmart clunker and tried to adjust to drop handlebars. I've only done one triathlon so far and it was just a sprint with a 12 mile bike. My clunker functioned fine although I swear even old ladies with walkers were passing me on the course. You see, this whole triathlon thing is a very expensive activity to just go dabbling in and I've been trying to do it on the cheap because I'm just getting my feet wet and trying to figure out if this is my next passion in life. The walmart crapper has been fine for just getting me out there and figuring out what the hell I'm doing. But now I'm in the market for a decent starter bike that won't break the bank but that I'm at least not embarassed to ride. The good news is that I've gotten off the couch and on the bike a bit and actually enjoy riding. I've learned quite a bit just about the basics like changing tires, appropriate apparel and gear, etc. I'm still very much a work in progress, but I'm glad to be back on two wheels.
