newb interested in getting bike

hey, i just moved back to brooklyn and find it annoying to drive my car. my friend, back in tennessee was interested in bikes, suggested i get one. i thought about biking to college, which is about 8 miles. i looked up a few bike shops and thought i get a decent used bike. what should i be looking for? brand, weight, price, etc. i have about 200 to spend. please help me out.

Welcome to Bike Forums. You've asked a question with a thousand different answers ... which is why these forums are so great. Try posting this question in the Commuting Forum. You'll get lots of opinions there. If you're looking for an older used bike, you can try the Vintage Forum.

Welcome.
If the shops in NY are like the ones around here, you'll be hard pressed finding a good selection of used bikes. But most shops have a "for sale board" where customers can post and sell their bikes. Another place to find a used bike may be www.craigslist.org or yard/garage sales. Good luck.

Plenty of bikes on craigslist like http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/bik/976055096.html You will have to allow about half your budget for things like rack, bags, pump, helmet and tools.

What AndrewP said. There are a lot of good older bikes out there. Also check pawn shops; I've seen some good, older road bikes in them that would do well for commuting duty. Your commute length is about the same as mine; allow about 50 minutes for the commute in the beginning; it will decrease toward 30 minutes as you get your legs under you.

If you haven't ridden recently, make sure you buy a helmet. You've got a higher chance of wrecking when you first start up again because of inexperience, etc. (Take it from me, I know!) You never forget how to ride a bike, but it takes a little time to get street savvy.
