I am looking to get started riding road bikes. I do not want to drop lots of money until I discover my style and preferences on riding. What suggestions would a veteran road biker give for getting started? I live in Redding, California.

Welcome to BF.
Visit a few bike shops, ask questions about components/frame material, tell them what your budget is, where you'll be riding, how far, how often, etc. and test ride all the bikes they put you on. Then come back and read thru and ask questions in the Road Cycling and/or General Cycling forums about the bikes you like.
