newbie cyclist in chicago

hello!

i've been reading posts on bike forums for a couple weeks now, and they've really helped me gain a lot of knowledge quickly about purchasing my first used bike. i figured it's about time i introduce myself and post my questions!

i'm still on the hunt for the perfect-fit ladies hybrid for a short gal with shorter arms and even shorter legs...although, with all the info i've found here, i'm confident i'll score a good find soon.

How short is short?

I'm 60 inches even  . Is there a reason for wanting a hybrid, rather than a straight road or straight mountain bike?

@ easthill - i'm 5'2 on a good day...

I was looking at hybrids mainly for the straight bars. I've got friends with road bikes with custom straight handlebars, but I don't have the budget for any customizations right now. As luck would have it though - I'm going to look at a road bike tonight that has what I'm looking for. So, we'll see...

I prefer a more upright riding position, and something about how my brain works - the curved bars give me too many options for hand placement. I need a more black and white approach. :) I know this comes in handy on long rides, so you can switch it up, but I just prefer eliminating the option all together. Personal quirk, I suppose...
