Bike newbie from FL (pic warning)

What's up everybody,
I'm brand new to biking, that is, besides childhood. I'm a Psych student at Florida State and decided to start pedaling my way around since my old mustang is getting too expensive to maintain through college. Its been less than a month, and I'm officially addicted to biking.
I bought a 1980's No-name Cierra Road bike from a non-profit bike shop for $90 and have already starting modding it and fixing some problems. I basically ride about 3-4 miles a day back and forth to school, and am starting to gather parts to build my girlfriend a hybrid so we can ride together.
My dad is building a sweet long distance bike in Jacksonville, and my brother rides his to work everyday in Orlando.
I used to work a lot on my car - all the time- so i have a good mechanical background and can't seem to leave things as is.

I have added fenders, new brakes, a bike computer and of course a U lock. I plan to replace some missing spokes, get new grip tape, fix some shifting issues, and hopefully replace much of the rusty hardware. Here's a couple of mine

and 1 to show my dad's (in progress)

(Not my ride^)
Thanks everybody!

Nole, welcome.
I too am a newbie to riding and hae just purchased a 700c hybred with 21 speeds.
Now I'm thinking I need a shrink for buying this much bike.
I really admire your work on your ride and to see that folks still see a value in making treasure out of near trash.
What does a bike computer do?

Hey Ann, thanks for the kind words. I'd be interested to see some pics of your hybrid as I'm going to be putting one together for my girlfriend. Believe, me, I would of spent more on a nicer bike if I wasn't a broke college student concerned about theft and vandalism on campus. A bike computer (idk if that what everybody calls them or not) records speed, avg speed, clock, miles and other features that generally serve little purpose to a casual commuter. I just can't resist gadgets and stuff lol.
And as for your bike, well just grow into it!
