    New to cycling

    Hi folks,
I'm fairly new to cycling. I'm going to be a Senior in high school, and for the past two years I've been using this old'ish gary fisher mountain bike for a little cross training, I'm a rower, over the summer and during vacations. It's a little small on me but for it's gotten the job done in the past. At present I'm looking into purchasing a road bike so I can get some real speed, and maybe go on some rides with a local bike shop. I'm not sure whether or not to buy used or new and have been doing some research on the bike websites and looked into buying used on ebay and craigslist. However, I'm finding it rather difficult to differentiate between the brands and their lower end/ entry level models. I'm just looking for some advice regarding a few things:
-What are things to watch out for (brands, models, scam websites)
-What are specifications to consider besides sizing(which I already know I'm a 58-60 cm)

I'm also interested in an indoor trainer for the winter and other days with especially inclement weather. So what are some especially reliable brands/designs?
In general I'm looking to spend around $1000 on a full bike, maybe a little more or a little less.
    Any advice is welcome! Thanks.
