A 60+ year old newbie
Greetings from Metro-East St. Louis.
Until two years ago walking was my primary cardio exercise, but because of chronic knee problems (Blew out my ACL 21 years ago), a second torn cartilage (knee surgery in 2007) and arthritis (knee and a total shoulder replacement in May 2008), it was recommended that I try biking. Late last summer I decided to invest in a bicycle and after researching settled on a Giant Suede.
I was taking short (five mile) rides almost daily and commuting to work until early winter weather started that never really ended until April. Once the semester was over (I am an education professor) I started an online subscription biking fitness program with daily rides combined with 3-day a week weight training. After 6 weeks I am at 10-15 miles almost daily, lost 12 lbs and four inches off the waist, and feel really great! Only 30 lbs and four more inches to go. My wife thinks that I am now addicted to riding. During a visit to Chicago to visit our son a couple of weeks ago I borrowed a bike for a day from a friend (who also loaned us her Michigan Ave. condo) and biked over 20 miles with Jr. on the lakefront. This week local temps were in the upper 90's, but I still got in early moring rides every day. So far, so good and I hope I am able to keep it up.
