Raleigh Arena (?)
Have joined the forum for some help. Have passed a Raleigh Arena from the cobwebs of garage in Liverpool to family wannabe London commuter who needs to start riding to work due to unsocial hours and tube distractions. However, the bike needs new tyres, brakes and only God and a good bike mechanic might know what else. So far the bike shop response in Stoke Newington, N16, is 'It'll cost over £80. Dump it and buy a new mountain bike from me for £90.' Anybody got any suggestions as to how to get this bike rejuvenated and back on the road, or is the 'man in N16' talking sense?

Thanks for the help and the welcome Midgie. After navigating the site I posted the same message on Mechanics and Gen Disc.
In response to enjoying the forum: after suffering with a broken shoulder and little medication, or sleep for three weeks, I had no choice about rediscovered my sense of humour after reading some of the postings, particularly the ones on 'insects' and 'spelling'. A welcome surprise. Let's hope the bike gets sorted too.

2. try Ebay.com for parts you need. A friend could fit them for you.
3. Post some pics here.. use a picture hosting service to get 'codes' for posting.
4. I have two of these Arenas one blue and the other green. The blue one has large spooled steel chromed hubs.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Well, all I can say, when restoring an older bike, is that it's the same mindset as restoring an antique car. You do it because you want to. The reasons vary, but in most cases, it's simply because the bike means something to you
