About to start riding...pregnant newbie :)

Hi I'm Lisa from Western NC. I'm 36wks pregnant so I have to hold off on riding until mid-late september. I'm new to bicycling but I have always wanted to ride further than the front yard with the kids. I don't know where I fit when it comes with the best bike for me I'm leaning towards road but I could also see myself riding some of the trails around here and yet also use it when running errands and fitness. Hmmm is there one bike for everything? I'm so happy to have found a forum that's active and can't wait to start learning more :)

Welcome to Bike Forums, Lisa. I hope all goes well with your baby!

The kind of bike you get depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want to eventually put a baby seat on the back or haul a baby trailer? If you want it for running errands, would you want a rack on the back for panniers?

We have a general cycling forum where you can ask all sorts of questions to find the kind of bike that will work best for you.

We also have a women's forum you are eligible to gain access to after posting for a month. Send a PM to Siu Blue Wind (administrator) to get access.

That'd be great I'll be sure to send Siu Blue Wind a pm after a month. I was curious as to which forum was general lol I saw all the different forums sorry I can be dense and over look links I didn't know which forum I fit under. I sort of want to use the bike for 3 things fitness, getting out of the house while my 2 older kids are in school, running errands and hauling groceries without the need of driving our SUV to save money. I was planning on using a trailer for hauling my baby. I'm a little worried about the what if's when it comes to biking with a baby in a baby seat and the possibility of tipping over no matter how unlikely it could be. I'd like to get a basket in the front and probably a rack with either baskets on both sides of the rear or panniers whichever would haul more and would be easier to remove if needed.

Check out the Hybrids and General Cycling forum.

A hybrid bike would be very easy to add a rack or trailer to the back. It would give you a more upright posture when riding. A road bike would would have a more forward posture, leaning over toward the handlebars. Road bikes also have skinnier tires for less road resistance (so they go faster) but those tires are also more susceptible to flats.

ahh yes yes less likelihood of flats are a plus :)
