old "newbie"
Hello, my name is Chris R. from Baraboo, WI. I just turned 43 and have enjoyed a bit of a comeback in cycling the last 3 years after a 12 year layoff. I got back into cycling because a couple of friends were riding regularly with a local club, the Baraboo Sharks.
Most of the members are around my age and despite the gray hairs are very fit and some race at a very competative level in a non-licensed 25 race series here in WI called Wisport. I'm usually a second or third pack guy but I have fun.
I also ride my mountain bike occasionally and have ridden the Chequamegon Fat Tire 40 race the last 2 years. It's the largest mountain bike race in N. America and leaves me half dead but I will do it again if my name gets picked (3,500 entrants for 2500 spots). Right now I'm having a terrible off-season. I'm about 20lbs over my race weight and my asthma is a pain despite numerous meds. Oh well, I'm sure things will get better.
My current bikes are: Specialized Allez road w/mostly Ultegra stuff and K2 Zed X mountain w/stock everything(mostly LX). Thanks for any future help and conversation.

Here we go, another "OLD" discussion.
First, welcome. Glad you are here.
Second, some of we younger riders, (I am 62 yo and didn't start riding until about 4 years ago) get a little uppity about you real youngsters of 43 or so calling yourself "old." Shame on you. We young folks of 62++ feel real put down. Heck, if someone who is 43 is "old," what must I be at 62??
3. So, you (and all of us) are YOUNG. It is not chronological age, it is a state of mind.
Enjoy the group.

Just kidding about being "old", I hope that I will be able to keep riding for many years to come. Other than the rapidly multiplying silver hairs, lots of people don't believe I'm in my 40's so I must be doing something right. Thanks for the greeting!

Welcome to BF.
I've had several people make similar comments to me, even other cyclists. They think I'm in my mid-40s. I'm actually 57.
Cycling keeps us young, no matter how old we are!
