Hi all, I'm graytotoro, and I live in Davis, C.A., which as some of you may know, is the most bike-friendly city in the whole nation
but I'm originally from seventy-ish miles south. Now onto the million-dollar-question - what do I ride? Well, due to an interesting turn of events involving an auction in which I was outbid on a Jamis Commuter by a man in a silly hat, I started my Davis biking career on a $15 Magna GlacierPoint, which, predictively, broke quickly after the rusted chain snapped and sent me into a curb due to the lack of front brakes. No amount of work could set that straight so my dad talked to a friend who gave me his old Freespirit FS 12 for the low price of free.
And here I am today, about two weeks later, blowing through the UC Davis campus on my "battle-scarred" -beater is too strong a word- road bike without first gear, dodging jaywalking pedestrians and the equally-"battle-scarred" Specialized HardRocks that never seem to die.
I've been riding bikes for quite a while, from the tender age of five on a Blue Huffy that sits in my garage, to the hand-me-down DiamondBack Viper and FreeSpirit Tailwind (crap crap crap), and last but not least, the above two bikes. The riding part I have down pat (took five minutes!), but the gearing is still a bit of a mystery to me.
For those of you wondering what happened to the Magna, I took the saddle and a friend took the brakes. The rest of the bike lays against the fence outside my dorm, watching sadly as owners smash expensive bikes against bike racks, wondering how it ended up like this. But fear not, I'll probably drop it off to the community group who could use the parts.
edit- I guess now's as good a time as any to say that it's the only way I have to get around. Seriously. It is damn near impossible to walk anywhere in this down.
