I like road bikes and cyclecross styles. I ride (mostly) a newer Specialized cross bike and an old Bianci. Prefer steel frames. Mountain bikes are fun on the roads too, but I never really got into woods riding even though there is lots of it around where I live. Too much bouncing for me. The cross bike is all I need on dirt roads and smooth paths.
