One more old fart looking for help....
Looking to buy my first bike in over 30 years.... my head's about to explode from how much I don't know about bikes! Have sort of figured out that I want a hybrid that leans to comfort (if that even makes sense) - jeesh - this was a lot easier in the 60's!

Get a road bike with lots of gears for hills.

Welcome to BF! Do some window-shopping at a good LBS. They should get you set up right with something that fits you as well as your needs, intended uses and budget.

Gotta agree with the above suggestions.
I don't know how old you are but I'm 68 and still love my road bikes.
See below.
Check out all the bike shops in your town until you find a shop you feel comfortable with. Then buy the (road) bike from them.
