Very new to the sport

Hello,

My name is Josh Houck, and I just turned 19. I'm from mid-ohio and I'm looking to get into the sport of cycling. I'm currently looking into buying my first road bike on sort of a budget around $500-$800. Could anyone help set me on a good path to becoming competitive?

Welcome to BF.
Read thru the threads in the Road Cycling forum for suggestions. You should be able to find several decent road bikes in your budget.

Find a helpful bike shop and then buy whatever brand they sell. If you just want exercise Sora shifters are fine, but if you are going to do competitive riding look for Tiagra.
