New and trying it out???
This is all new to me. I'm really not understanding what I'm doing here, but here goes. I'm an old guy (68) but enjoy riding for fitness and the fun of it. Would love to do the spandex thing and have a really hot road bike, but I look really goofy in spandex and my budget prohibits big buck bikes. For now I have an 09 TREK 7.5 FX Satin Nickel as my serious ride and a Raleigh Uptown City Sport as a back up for neighborhood spins. I'm married with 2 grown kids, 4 grands and a great grand on the way. The wife is not into bikes so I'm on my own when I can. I started riding again about 3 years ago after retiring. There are some decent paved trails that I can use within a few miles. I throw the bike on my Yakima hitch rack and go for it. The rather humorous thing to me is when I am sailing along on the TREK thinking I'm really getting it on, a young dude on a roady with spandex galore comes flying by me like I'm standing still. I live in Marietta GA, just outside of Atlanta. Our weather permits riding most of the year round. I also piddle with fixer uppers and peddle them on Craigslist just to give them new life. Back in the late 50's I road a Schwinn Varsity 3 speed thinking I was king of the road. Put many a mile on it. Then after school I got into motorcycling and did that for over 40 years. Lost some good friends in accidents and finally hung it up. Look forward to seeing what's going on with this site. See ya around.

I am 68 and 235 lb. We are too old to worry how we look. I am most comfortable in bib shorts, Sidi shoes and cycling or soccer jersey. The rather humorous thing to me is when I am sailing along thinking I'm really getting it on, a young dude on a Walmart MTB in jeans comes flying by me like I'm standing still.

Welcome to BikeForums.
I'm 65 and only wear lycra/spandex bibs. I feel weird wearing street clothes when on the bike. It's a matter of what is comfortable on the bike. Cycling shorts (and bibs) were made for bike riding, not necessarily as a fashion statement.

Welcome to the forum....and age is just a number! Don't worry about the lycra embarrassment, it happens all the time. Just keep riding, cuz the people that would laugh at you today will be pushing up daisies tomorrow. Lycra rocks!!

I wear shorts over my lycra bike shorts. in the summer I'll ride in the lycra but carry elastic gym shorts and a cap to slip on during breaks or when I go into stores. when I get back on the bike I swap the hat for the helmet and slide the shorts back into my rack trunk
