I'm new to this forum--glad I found it. Any others from Seattle, Belleve, Kirkland, Redmond?
I'm in my 50's and recently took up biking. I'm encouraged to find all of these senior bikers posting around the forum--it is inspiring. I ride a 2004 Specialized Sirrus Hybrid. Did my first major organized ride two days ago--I bonked bad from not having the right food with me as I road and failing to eat the right stuff the days before. I tried those energy gels and they make me gag.
I crashed twice (those clipless pedals are pesky) mostly hurt my pride.
In my first 5 miles of the ride I got a wasp stuck under the lens of my sunglasses--stung me 3 times before I could grap my glasses off and pull it out of my eye lid. I subsequently did a web search on biking and bees and found I am not alone. I'll be buying some Rudy Kerosene's to seal off my eye area, take a bee kit and one of those squeeze coldpacks in my small backpack.
I clenched my teeth and finished that ride--I think my anger at myself gave me the energy. I feel like I've been initiated in to the real world of biking. I'm happy to know that there are other older stronger and fatter bikers than me--there were a lot of them on the ride--gave me great hope.
With all this I'm learning what to eat, not eat, what to wear, all the stuff I still have to buy to get myself set up.
